Ciaran Brown with Ron Perlman
Although Ron Perlman has been at a lot of conventions in America, the first time that he had done one in England was in June 2005 when he attended the London Film & Comic Convention held at Earls Court.  I was very pleased to be able to be there to meet this talented stage actor who is famous for playing the title role in Hellboy.

The Perlman Pages
A look at Ron Perlman's filmography on IMDb will show just how busy he is these days!! In addition to his on-screen acting, Perlman has done extensive 'voice-work' for various animated sries' including Batman, Superman, Teen Titans and Justice League and Fanny Phantom. His voice work also extends to video games where his credits include Halo 2 (Xbox) and Hellboy: Blood and Iron.

Perlman has acquired a reputation for playing characters that require extensive make up. This is because he frequently appears as characters who are either deformed or not human. His role as Amoukar in his first film, La Guerre du Feu, was one of these. Later came Salvatore in Der Name Der Rose;  Vincent in Beauty and the Beast, Sayer of the Law in The Island of Dr. Moreau, Reinhardt in Blade II, and the Reman Viceroy in Star Trek: Nemesis. In Hellboy, his entire body is covered in prosthetics and make up, apart from his eyelids!

As a result of del Toro's influence, Ron Perlman got the title role in Hellboy (2004) despite
In 2002, Ron Perlman played the part of reinhardt in Blade II, opposite Wesley Snipes (as Blade) and Kris Kristofferson (as Whistler). This film was directed by the Mexican, Guillermo del Toro, who has become closely associated with Ron Perlman. Del Toro directed the award-winning horror film Cronos (1993) in which Perlman played Angel de la Guardia.
Perlman's success in Beauty and the Beast led to many supporting roles in films during the late 1980s and 1990s.  These included Romeo is Bleeding (1993), The Adventures of Huck Finn (1993), The Island of Dr Moreau (1996) and Alien: Resurrection (1997).
Ron Perlman was born in 1950, and grew up in Manhattan, New York.  He bcame interested in acting at his High School, and took the lead part in  the 1930s comedy Thieves Carnival.
He graduated from Lehman College in New York City in 1971 with a BA degree in Theatre, and then went on to study at the University of Michigan, choosing this University because it was close to the famous Guthrie Theatre. Whilst at Minnesota, he was in several different plays, including The Two Gentlemen of Verona by Shakespeare.

To show how dedicated as actor Ron Perlman is, he prepared for his role in Hellboy by reading all of  the Hellboy comics and working out three hours a day, for to seven days a week, to build up his physique. Unfortunately he broke a rib whilst filming a subway scene in Hellboy, when he jumped onto a train that was coming towards him.

the Studio wanting a higher profile actor to play the part.  Hellboy is based on Mike Mignola's comic book creature from Hell who, after being captured from the Nazis by the Americans, is used by them, sixty years later, to become a defender against the
forces of evil. This film is about  pure, old-fashioned, good versus evil except, of course, that the good guy is a red devil!

A more substantial role was that of a circus strongman and former whale hunter called One in The City of Lost Children (1995). This is a very strange French fantasy, visually compelling, but with weird characters and a complex story line. Perlman doesn't speak French, however, he learnt all of his lines, and delivered
them flawlessly!
